According to the police, a Stamford man is facing charges after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and striking a police sergeant early on New Year’s Day.
On Thursday, 28-year-old Edward Salazar-Martinez was driving northbound on Hope Street at about 2 a.m. when he plowed through a line of traffic cones and struck K-9 Sgt. Richard Phelan, who was responding to an accident that happened earlier.
Phelan was standing outside his cruiser and was blocking the traffic after a 14-year-old took his parents’ motor vehicle without permission and hit a phone pole at Hope Street and Plymouth Road shortly after midnight, ruining the power https://phenterminehealth.com lines.
According to the police, Phelan’s motor vehicle had its emergency lights on and was surrounded by orange traffic cones.
Police also told that Salazar-Martinez refused to give a breath sample for testing and failed field sobriety tests which were issued at the scene. He was taken into custody and charged with DUI, driving with a suspended driver’s license and striking an officer with a motor vehicle.
He was released on $5,000 bond and his court date is scheduled for 14th of January.
Phelan sustained a minor leg injury in the accident and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
