Consequences For DUI In Connecticut

DUI Attorney, Middlesex, County Connecticut

The consequences of a DUI charge in Connecticut can be severe, and State police take a mere suspicion of driving under the influence quite seriously. If convicted, these charges could require fines, inconvenient sacrifices, and even jail time.

In Connecticut, you are considered legally intoxicated if your blood alcohol content is 0.08% or above. The penalties can be harsh and can involve a combination of fines, loss of license, installation of an alcohol-sensing ignition interlock device (IID), and even jail time.

First Conviction

If you are over 21, an initial DUI conviction will cost you at least 48 hours in jail. The maximum jail time possible is six months. You will lose your license for 45 days, could pay fines of up to $1,000, and must have an IID installed in your vehicle for one year.

Second Conviction

A second DUI conviction will cost you your license for 45 days. You could be facing jail time of up to two years and $1,000 to $4,000 in fines.

The State will also require an IID to be placed in your car for three years. During the first year of this penalty, you may legally drive only to and from work, school, an alcohol or drug treatment program, or an appointment with a probation officer.

Third Or Subsequent Convictions

Permanent loss of driver’s license. You must wait two years before requesting a reconsideration of this permanent loss, though a reversal of this ruling is in no way guaranteed. You can face jail time of up to three years and fines of $2,000 to $8,000.

These are serious consequences. The fines alone can be considerable, and further consequences can cost you valuable time away from loved ones, a permanent blot on your record, future professional setbacks, and your loss of freedom and independence.

The Nuances Of A DUI Case

DUI Attorney, Middlesex, County Connecticut

How can a lawyer help you fight a DUI charge in Middlesex County, Connecticut? A good DUI lawyer will have the legal background to best interpret the circumstances of your arrest and help you contest unmerited or excessive charges.

Your attorney can investigate at length and uncover the full extent of…

  • Your day prior to the arrest
  • The minutes leading up to the stop and
  • The stop and arrest themselves

Reviewing police dash cam and body cam footage can help your attorney get a sense of what truly happened during your stop. Did the officers follow all protocols and standards for valid policing? Did they have reasonable grounds to suspect a DUI and arrest you?

Remember that arresting officers, while highly trained, can make mistakes, be led by biases, or misunderstand your actions. For example, reaching for a phone while driving can be misunderstood as intoxicated weaving and cause you to be stopped and questioned.

Your case deserves respect, careful handling, and tailored attention. Allow a veteran, hard-working lawyer to defend your rights, uncover the truth, and protect your privileges as a motorist.
